It is a physiological response to a deeply disturbing experience that overwhelms a person’s ability to cope.
It results from situations, that threaten a person’s physical or emotional well-being, which leave a lasting negative or painful impact on their minds and bodies.
A person suffering from trauma experiences their nervous system as stuck in a fight, flight or freeze response.
Fight and Flight responses are hyper-arousal and characterized by anxiety, overwhelm, anger, emotional outbursts, compulsive thoughts or behaviors, and addictions.
The Freeze response is characterized by not being present, shut down, forgetful, disconnected, on autopilot, flat emotions and separation from one’s self or feelings.
All of these experiences are signs that the person is activated and needs to regulate their nervous system.
“What’s wrong with me?”
“Why can’t I shake this off?”
“Why do I feel numb and emotionally stuck?”
“Why am I stressed and tense all of the time?”
To begin somatic therapy, I gather a thorough history of a client's past and identify which type(s) of trauma they have such as historic, collective, medical, secondary, developmental, complex, chronic or acute trauma. Once I know what is at the root of it, I then guide my clients through a healing process that works directly with the autonomic nervous system. We are healthiest when it pendulates between activation and relaxation, as is appropriate to each situation in life. After somatic sessions, clients report feeling ease. They are less preoccupied by past events and have more energy to direct towards their current life goals, etc.
These 90 minute treatments are immersive and involve working with the body. At the start of sessions, goals are established for where the client wants to direct the energy generated from their session. Clients then lie on a massage table while I use light touch to work with the client's cerebrospinal fluid. She helps release restrictions and to activate the healing energy system within the client's own body. After treatments, clients report seeing significant improvement in actualizing the goals that they established for their treatment, feeling clearer and being more capable of taking action towards their goals. They also typically feel more energized.
